History of Morgantown
Morgantown was started around the end of the American Civil War. A man named George Decatur Morgan founded it. He first came to the area before the war. He traveled by wagon train with a family called "Outlaw." George Morgan worked for the Outlaws as a hired helper on their farm.
After serving in the war, George Morgan came back to this area. He settled on a small piece of land about a mile south of where Morgantown is today. He continued to work as a farm-hand for the Outlaw family.
In the 1860s, George Morgan and other early settlers bought more land. These settlers included Daniel McHann, Miland Scott, and George Johns. They worked together to form a farming cooperative. Many hired workers came to live in the area to help with the crops.
The community grew and built important places. They set up a sawmill to cut wood. They also had a cotton gin to process cotton. A school house was built, which also served as the church.
George Morgan had many children and other family members. Over time, his descendants bought land from the original settlers. They especially bought land from the McHann family. People say that the wife of one of Morgan's descendants suggested the name "Morgantown." This was because so many Morgan family members lived there.
