History of Morris Village
The village of Morris was first settled by French families. They called it "Louisville." One of the first known settlers was Andre Renouard.
In 1870, the village officially became a part of the state. Its name was changed to "Morris." This was done to avoid confusion with another place called Louisville in New York.
Long ago, the water from Butternut Creek was very important. It powered many factories that made cloth. These factories were called textile mills. One of them was the Hargrave factory. Another was the Butternuts Wool & Cotton Co.
A street called Spring Street was planned for a new factory. But the local textile industry faced problems. The factory was never finished. Today, Morris Central School has expanded onto this area.
