Mouloud Feraoun (born March 8, 1913 – died March 15, 1962) was an important Algerian writer. He was born in a place called Tizi Hibel, in Kabylie. He wrote his books in French. Many of his books have been translated into other languages, like English and German.

Feraoun's stories often talked about the people from his homeland. He wrote about the Berber mountain farmers and their daily lives. His books explored themes like poverty, love for one's country, and moving to new places. They also showed the effects of French rule in Algeria.

In 1951, he exchanged letters with the famous French writer Albert Camus. Sadly, Mouloud Feraoun was kidnapped and killed by a French group called the OAS on March 15, 1962. This happened just before the end of the Algerian War. Years later, on March 3, 2022, the French president Emmanuel Macron honored Feraoun and others who were victims of the OAS.

About Mouloud Feraoun's Life

Mouloud Feraoun was born in 1913 into a family of poor farmers. His father could not read or write. To find work, his father had to travel far away. He even went to northern France to work in coal mines.

Feraoun's father was hurt while working in the mines. This sad event later inspired Mouloud Feraoun's first novel, Fils du Pauvre (Son of the Poor).

Becoming a Teacher

Back then, not many Algerian Muslim children went to school. But Feraoun was able to study at a special school called Ecole normale. He trained there to become a teacher.

In 1935, he started teaching in his own hometown. Later, in 1957, Feraoun became a school director in Algiers. By 1960, he was an inspector. He helped oversee places that cared for Algerians who needed support.

His Tragic Death

On March 15, 1962, Mouloud Feraoun was killed. Five of his colleagues were also killed that day. They were assassinated by the OAS. This terrible event happened only four days before the Algerian War officially ended.
