Mount Albert railway station is located in the suburb of Mount Albert in Auckland City, New Zealand. It is part of the Western Line on the Auckland railway network. The station is very close to Unitec, a large school, and many students use it.
The station has an island platform, which means the platform is in the middle with tracks on both sides. You can get to the station using different paths. There's a footbridge from Carrington Road at one end. An overbridge from New North Road is on the eastern side. There's also a subway (an underground path) that connects Willcott Street and New North Road.
Station History
Early Days
- 1880: Mount Albert station first opened. It was one of the very first stations on the North Auckland Line.
- 1908: A signal box was added. This was a small building where workers controlled the train signals.
- 1909: The original station building was destroyed by fire. A new building was quickly built to replace it.
- 1920s: A siding that went to the Mount Albert Quarry was closed. A siding is a short section of track used for trains to wait or load goods.
- 1966: The railway line was made into a double-tracked line. This means it had two tracks instead of one. Because of this, much of the old station equipment, like the signal box, was removed. The old signal box is now kept safe at the MOTAT.
Modern Upgrades
- 2010: People started talking a lot about how old and worn out the station looked. They felt it needed to be fixed up, especially the ways people got in and out, and the shelters from the weather.
- 2013: The station got a big upgrade! This was part of a two-stage plan by Auckland Transport. The upgrade cost $9 million and included a covered walkway from Carrington Road. It also got new shelters for passengers and other improvements. This work was done to get ready for the Auckland railway electrification project, which would bring electric trains. The first stage was officially opened in July 2013.
- 2016: The second stage of the upgrade was finished. A new overbridge was opened on September 17, 2016. This bridge connects the station directly to the shopping area in Mount Albert, making it easier for people to get to the shops.
