Baldy Mountain Resort is a popular spot for winter adventures. It offers slopes for all skill levels, from beginners to experts. The resort is known for its friendly atmosphere and beautiful mountain views.
Where is Baldy Mountain Resort?
Baldy Mountain Resort is in British Columbia, Canada. It's just north of the Washington state border. You can drive there from Oliver using McKinney Road. You can also get there from BC Highway 33 or BC Highway 3. If you're flying, the nearest airport is Penticton Regional Airport. The resort sits on a high area called the Okanagan Highland. This area is between the Monashee Mountains and the Okanagan Valley.
A Look Back at Baldy's History
Baldy Mountain Resort first opened in 1968. In its first year, it used a special snowcat to take skiers up the mountain. It also had a T-bar lift called McKinney T-Bar. A year later, in 1969, a new Poma T-bar was added. This T-bar went up the face of Mount Baldy. The base of this T-bar was very high, at 5,650 feet above sea level. This made it the highest base altitude for any ski resort in Canada!
Later, the Poma T-bar was replaced. A double chairlift, originally from Mount Washington, took its place. This lift is now known as the Eagle Chair.
Skiing and Snowboarding Fun
In 2007, a new lift called Sugarlump was installed. This is a quad chair lift, which means it can carry four people at once. It can take up to 750 people up the mountain every hour. Baldy Mountain Resort has 35 downhill skiing trails. In 2012, a new trail was created. This trail connects the Sugarlump area to the McKinney area. It helps skiers and snowboarders get to the terrain park easily.
The resort also has trails for Nordic skiing, which is also known as cross-country skiing. These trails are usually open from December through March.
Ski-in, Ski-out Village
Baldy Mountain Resort has a special village. It has about 150 ski cottages. These cottages are "ski-in, ski-out." This means you can ski right from your door to the slopes! And you can ski right back to your cottage when you're done.
What Else Can You Do?
Besides skiing and snowboarding, there are other things to do at Baldy Mountain Resort.
- There is a ski school where you can learn to ski or improve your skills.
- The resort has a day-lodge where you can relax.
- There is also a lounge.
- You can rent ski equipment if you don't have your own.
- Snowshoe rentals are also available at the Snow Sports Centre.
Recent Changes at the Resort
The ski hill faced some challenges and did not open for the 2013-2014 season. However, it did open for part of the 2014-2015 season. During that time, only the Sugarlump lift and the magic carpet were running. Food and drinks were available in the lodge.
New owners took over the resort in 2016. They changed the name to Baldy Mountain Resort. This was to help people tell it apart from other ski areas with similar names. The resort successfully opened for the 2016-2017 season. Baldy Mountain Resort is still open today under its new ownership. There are plans to make even more improvements in the future!
