Mount Bear is a very tall mountain located in Alaska, in the United States. It's part of the amazing Saint Elias Mountains range. This mountain is covered in glaciers, which are like huge, slow-moving rivers of ice.

You can find Mount Bear inside the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. This park is one of the largest protected areas in the world! Mount Bear is quite close to the border with Yukon, Canada, about 4 miles (6.4 km) away.

Mount Bear: A Giant Peak

Mount Bear stands at an impressive height of 14,831 feet (4,520 meters) above sea level. This makes it one of the tallest mountains in the United States. In fact, it's one of the top 20 highest peaks in the country!

What is a Fourteener?

Mountains that are 14,000 feet (about 4,267 meters) or taller are often called "fourteeners." Mount Bear is definitely a fourteener. It's a special club for very high mountains.

Glaciers Around Mount Bear

Because Mount Bear is so high, it's surrounded by ice and snow all year round. Two large glaciers flow from its slopes:

  • The Barnard Glacier moves from the southwest side of the mountain.
  • The Klutlan Glacier is located to the north.

These glaciers are important features of the mountain's landscape.

Exploring the Saint Elias Mountains

Mount Bear is a huge mountain, but it's not as well-known as some of its neighbors. It's surrounded by even taller and more famous peaks. For example, Mount Bona is to the west, and Mount Lucania and Mount Logan are to the east. Mount Logan, in Canada, is the highest mountain in Canada!

Even though it's less visited, Mount Bear is still a very impressive peak. The land drops very steeply from its summit down to the Barnard Glacier. It drops about 8,000 feet (2,438 meters) in less than 5 miles (8 km). It drops 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) in less than 12 miles (19.3 km). This shows just how massive Mount Bear truly is!
