List of the highest major summits of the United States facts for kids
The United States is home to many amazing mountains, and some of the tallest are truly giants! This article is all about the 477 highest mountain peaks in the U.S. that are at least 3,000 meters (about 9,843 feet) tall and stand out at least 500 meters (about 1,640 feet) from their surroundings.
When we talk about how tall a mountain is, we use a few special words:
- Elevation means how high the top of the mountain is above sea level.
- Prominence tells us how much a mountain rises above the land right around it. Think of it as how much it "sticks out" from its base.
- Isolation measures how far a mountain is from another mountain that is just as tall or taller.
Only one mountain in the United States, Denali in Alaska, is taller than 6,000 meters (about 19,685 feet). Four major peaks are over 5,000 meters (about 16,404 feet), and 104 are over 4,000 meters (about 13,123 feet). The list below focuses on the 477 major summits that are at least 3,000 meters tall.
Exploring the Tallest U.S. Mountains (Over 3,000 Meters)
There are 477 mountain peaks in the United States that meet our special criteria: they are at least 3,000 meters tall and rise at least 500 meters above their surroundings. Many of these towering peaks are found in certain states. For example, 117 of them are in Colorado, 67 in Alaska, and 51 in California. Other states with many tall peaks include Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Nevada, and Idaho.
Some of these mountains even sit on the border between the U.S. and other countries! Five peaks are on the border of Alaska and the Yukon (in Canada), and three are on the border of Alaska and British Columbia (also in Canada). The ten very tallest major summits in the United States are all found in Alaska.
The northernmost peak that meets these height requirements is Hess Mountain in central Alaska. The southernmost is Mauna Loa in Hawaiʻi. To the west, we have Haleakalā on the island of Maui, and to the east, East Spanish Peak in Colorado. If we only look at the main part of the U.S. (not including Alaska and Hawaii), the northernmost major peak is Kintla Peak in Montana, the southernmost is Mount Graham in Arizona, the westernmost is Mount Shasta in California, and the easternmost is still East Spanish Peak in Colorado.
