Discovering Hole in the Mountain Peak

One of the most interesting features of this mountain is a natural arch called Hole in the Mountain or Lizzie's Window. This amazing rock formation is located on a ridge about one-third of a mile (0.5 km) south of the very top of the peak. It sits at an elevation of about 11,127 feet (3,391 meters). You can even see this natural window from the highway, including I-80 and US 93.
Exploring the Peak: Hiking Adventures
If you enjoy hiking or climbing, you can try to reach Lizzie's Window or the main peak. There are two main ways to approach the mountain: from Starr Valley on the west side or from Clover Valley on the east side.
Getting to the Mountain: East Side Approach
The route from Clover Valley is often chosen because the window is always in sight, even though it can be quite challenging. To get to Clover Valley, you drive south from Wells on US Highway 93. After about 5 miles (8 km), you turn onto State Route 232.
About 6 miles (9.7 km) down this road, look for a sign for Week's Creek Canyon. This is a public road that leads towards Lizzie's Basin and deeper into the mountain. You can drive as far as your vehicle allows on this two-wheel track road.
Reaching the Summit
There are no marked trails on the mountain, so you will need to find your own path. Trying to go directly to Lizzie's Window from this side can be very difficult and even dangerous. Instead, it's often easier and safer to first make your way up to Hole in the Mountain Peak, which is a bit north of the window. Once you reach the peak, you can then approach Lizzie's Window from the west side of the mountain, which is usually an easier descent.
Amazing Views from the Top
When you reach the summit of Hole in the Mountain Peak, you are rewarded with incredible 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape. It's a truly breathtaking experience to see so far in every direction from such a high point.
