The Sneffels Range is a group of tall, rugged mountains in southwestern Colorado. It is part of the larger San Juan Mountains, which are themselves a part of the huge Rocky Mountains. The Sneffels Range forms the southern edge of Ouray County and stretches from west to east. These mountains are considered "young" in geological terms, meaning they were formed more recently than many other mountain ranges.
Seeing the Sneffels Range
The Sneffels Range is very easy to spot because its peaks stand out so much. You can see these mountains from far away, even from the La Sal Mountains in eastern Utah. They are also very clear to see from most places in the Uncompahgre Valley.
The tallest mountain in the Sneffels Range is Mount Sneffels. This impressive peak reaches a height of 14,158 feet (4,315 m). That's over 14,000 feet high!
