Mount Deborah is a tall mountain located in Alaska, a U.S. state. It's part of the eastern Alaska Range. Even though it's not the highest mountain in North America, it stands out because it rises very steeply from the land around it. For example, its Northeast Face goes up 7,000 feet (2,135 meters) in just about 1.5 miles (2.4 km)! This steepness, along with tough access, bad weather, and lots of ice and snow, makes Mount Deborah a very hard mountain to climb.

The mountain was named in 1907 by James Wickersham. He named it after his first wife, Deborah Susan (Bell) Wickersham.

First Climbs and Challenges

Mount Deborah is known for being a very difficult peak to climb. Its steep sides and icy conditions make it a big challenge for even experienced mountaineers.

The First Successful Climb

The first time anyone successfully climbed Mount Deborah was in 1954. A team of three climbers, Fred Beckey, Henry Meybohm, and Heinrich Harrer, reached the top. They used a path called the South Ridge.

Other Important Climbs

Many climbers have tried to reach the summit of Mount Deborah. Here are some notable attempts and successful climbs:

  • In 1953, a team tried to climb the South Ridge but did not make it.
  • In 1964, David Roberts and Don Jensen attempted the East Ridge. Their story is told in a famous book.
  • In 1975, a team of six climbers made the second successful ascent. They used a new path called the West Buttress and South Ridge. It took them 36 days to reach the top on May 8.
  • In 1976, another new path, the Northwest Ridge, was climbed. This was the third time anyone reached the summit.
  • In 1977, Dakers Gowans and Charles Macquarrie climbed the North Face. This was a new and very challenging route.

Today, the West Face is considered the most common way to climb the mountain. The Northwest Ridge is also a recommended route for climbers.
