Mount Cook, sometimes called Boundary Peak 182, is a very tall mountain. It stands right on the border between the Yukon Territory in Canada and Alaska in the United States. This impressive peak is part of the Saint Elias Mountains in North America. It's a huge natural landmark that helps mark the boundary between these two areas. The border actually runs in straight lines between many of these major peaks. This same border also separates Kluane National Park in Canada from Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in the U.S.

About Mount Cook

Mount Cook is a giant mountain located in the Saint Elias Mountains. These mountains are known for their impressive size and rugged beauty. Mount Cook is about 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Mount Vancouver. It is also about 35 miles (56 km) east-southeast of Mount Saint Elias.

A Giant Mountain

Like many peaks in the Saint Elias Mountains, Mount Cook is truly massive. It rises very high above the land around it. For example, its southwest side drops 10,000 feet (3,048 m) down to the Marvine Glacier. This huge drop happens in only about 4 miles (6.4 km). The mountain is also quite close to the ocean. Disenchantment Bay is less than 18 miles (29 km) from the very top of Mount Cook.

Climbing Challenges

Mount Cook was first climbed in 1953 by a team of four climbers. These were T. Kelley, R. McGowan, T. Miller, and F. Mohling. However, not many people have climbed Mount Cook since then. This is because it is very far away from towns and cities. The mountain itself is also very big and difficult to climb.

The weather near Mount Cook is often bad because it is so close to the ocean. This makes climbing even harder. Also, Mount Cook is not one of the very highest peaks in its mountain range. Because of these reasons, it is not a popular mountain for climbers. In fact, there are only a few mentions of Mount Cook in climbing journals.
