List of the highest major summits of Canada facts for kids
Canada is a huge country with many amazing mountains! This article will tell you about some of the tallest and most important mountain peaks in Canada. These are the peaks that stand out the most from the land around them.
When we talk about mountains, there are a few ways to measure them:
- Elevation: This is how high a mountain's top (called its summit) is above sea level. Imagine the ocean's surface; elevation tells you how far up the peak is from that level.
- Prominence: This measures how much a mountain rises above the land directly around its base. Think of it like a bump on a bigger hill. A mountain with high prominence really stands out! All the mountains in this list have at least 500 meters (about 1,640 feet) of prominence, meaning they are truly noticeable peaks.
- Isolation: This tells you how far a mountain is from another mountain that is just as tall or taller. It shows how "alone" a mountain stands.
Canada has five major mountains that are taller than 5,000 meters (about 16,400 feet)! Many more are over 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) or 3,000 meters (9,842 feet).
Canada's Tallest Mountains
Out of the 150 tallest and most prominent mountains in Canada, most are found in British Columbia (102 peaks) and Yukon (37 peaks). Alberta has 13, Nunavut has two, and the Northwest Territories has one. Some of these mountains are right on the border between provinces, or even on the international border with Alaska in the United States!
Here's a list of some of the very highest and most prominent mountains in Canada. This table shows their rank, name, where they are, their mountain range, their elevation (how high they are), their prominence (how much they stand out), and their isolation (how far they are from other tall peaks).
