What's in a Name?

Why is it Called Queen Mary?

Mount Queen Mary got its name in 1935. It was named after Queen Mary, who was the wife of King George V of the United Kingdom. A nearby mountain, Mount King George, was named after the King.

These mountains were named to celebrate a special event: the King and Queen's silver jubilee. A silver jubilee marks 25 years of a king or queen ruling their country. It's like a 25th anniversary for a ruler!

Climbing Mount Queen Mary

First Climbs and Routes

Even though Mount Queen Mary is a very large mountain, some parts of it are not too steep. This makes it a bit easier to climb from certain directions, especially from the north side.

The very first time someone successfully climbed to the top of Mount Queen Mary was in 1961. A team of seven climbers from Seattle, a city in the United States, made this first ascent. They climbed up the mountain's northeast ridge.

Later, in 1978, another team made a new climb. This time, it was a Canadian team, and guess what? They even brought a dog along for the adventure! This team climbed the mountain using its west ridge.

Since then, other climbers have also reached the summit of Mount Queen Mary. Most of these climbs have been done from the north and west sides of the mountain, where the slopes are more gentle.
