Barbeau Peak, Nunavut
Barbeau Peak on Ellesmere Island is the highest point of Nunavut and the most isolated major mountain in Canada.

Canada is home to many amazing mountains! This article is about the most isolated mountain peaks in Canada. When we talk about mountains, we can measure them in a few ways:

  • Elevation is how high a mountain's top (called its summit) is above sea level. Think of it like how high you are above the ocean.
  • Prominence is how much a mountain rises above the land right around it. Imagine a hill on a flat plain – it has high prominence. A peak on a high plateau might have less prominence if it doesn't stick out much from the land nearby.
  • Isolation is how far a mountain's summit is from any other land that is just as high or higher. It tells you how "alone" a mountain stands.

Many major mountains in Canada are very isolated. For example, 12 peaks are more than 500 kilometers (about 310 miles) away from any other peak of similar height!

Canada's Most Isolated Mountains

Out of the 150 most isolated major mountains in Canada, most are found in British Columbia (98 of them!). Other provinces and territories with many isolated peaks include Nunavut (16 peaks) and Yukon (16 peaks). A few are also in Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, and the Northwest Territories. You can even find one each in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick! Some of these special mountains are right on the borders between provinces or even on the international border with Alaska.
