Mount Natazhat is a very tall mountain located in Alaska, United States. It is part of the amazing Saint Elias Mountains. This peak sits right near the border with the Yukon Territory in Canada.

Even though it's not as famous as some other mountains, Mount Natazhat is huge! It rises about 9,000 feet (2,743 meters) from the flat lands nearby. It also stands about 7,500 feet (2,286 meters) above the Klutlan Glacier to its south. This makes it a very impressive sight.

Exploring Mount Natazhat

Mount Natazhat is found in the northern part of the Saint Elias Mountains. It's located south of the White River and north of the large Klutlan Glacier. This area is part of the Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve. It is a wild and beautiful place.

How Tall is Mount Natazhat?

Mount Natazhat reaches a height of 13,435 feet (4,095 meters) above sea level. This makes it one of the highest peaks in its region. While it's very tall, it's not considered a "fourteener." A fourteener is a mountain that is 14,000 feet or taller.

Its Place Among Other Peaks

Mount Natazhat is ranked among many other high mountains. For example, it is the 96th highest major peak in all of North America. It is also the 79th highest major peak in the United States. In Alaska, it ranks as the 19th highest major peak. This shows how significant it is, even if it's not widely known.

Climbing Mount Natazhat

Climbing Mount Natazhat is a big adventure. The mountain is in a very remote area, meaning it's far away from towns and roads. This makes it a challenging place to reach.

The First Climbers

The first time someone might have climbed Mount Natazhat was in June 1913. This climb was reportedly done by a group from the Canadian Boundary Survey. However, this first ascent is still debated by some.

The Main Climbing Route

The most common way to climb Mount Natazhat today is along its northeast ridge. This route was first successfully climbed in 1996. A team of four climbers, D. Hart, P. Barry, H. Hunt, and D. Lucey, completed this ascent.

What is the Northeast Ridge Route Like?

This climbing route is considered moderately difficult for Alaska. It is given an "Alaska Grade 3+" rating. This means climbers can expect some challenging parts. These include steep sections of ice and narrow ridges covered in snow, called cornices. Climbers need special gear and skills for this kind of climb.

Why is it Not Often Climbed?

Mount Natazhat is not climbed very often. One main reason is its remote location. Getting there takes a lot of effort and planning. Also, compared to some of Alaska's super-tall mountains, it's not as high. Because it's not a "fourteener," it doesn't get as much attention from climbers looking for the highest peaks. In fact, it's rarely mentioned in climbing journals.
