Mount Bendeleben is a tall mountain in Alaska, United States. It is the highest peak in the Bendeleben Mountains. These mountains are part of the Seward Peninsula.

Mount Bendeleben is located in the western part of the mountain range. It stands about 37 miles (60 kilometers) southwest of Imuruk Lake. This mountain is a well-known landmark in the area.

What's in a Name?

Mount Bendeleben got its name in 1866. An exploration team from Western Union named it. They named it after their leader, Baron Otto von Bendeleben.

Local people had their own name for the mountain. In 1921, A. H. Brooks from the USGS reported it. The native name was "Ahneyiyuk." This name means "looks like a big one."

A Famous Landmark

Even though it's not the highest mountain in Alaska, Mount Bendeleben is very famous. It is likely the most well-known mountain on the Seward Peninsula. On a clear day, you can see it standing tall above other mountains. It truly looks like a giant landmark.
