Mount Dutton Bay is a beautiful coastal area in the Eyre Peninsula region of South Australia. It's part of the District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula. This place got its official name and boundaries in October 2003. It's named after the lovely body of water called Mount Dutton Bay.

The area includes three older places where people have holiday homes or "shacks." These are Mount Dutton Bay West, Mount Dutton Bay East, and Shelley Beach/Salt Creek.

Exploring Mount Dutton Bay's Past

Mount Dutton Bay has a rich history, especially with its old woolshed and jetty. These important structures are listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. This means they are protected because of their historical value.

The Historic Woolshed and Jetty

The famous Mount Dutton Bay Woolshed and Mount Dutton Bay Jetty were built by a pioneer named Price Maurice. He was an important farmer in the Eyre Peninsula area. He built them to shear wool from his sheep farms. The wool was then sent to markets by boat. The jetty, which is the newer of the two, was built in 1881.

This site was a busy center for the wool industry until the 1950s. After that, it became a popular spot for fun activities and holidays.

What's There Today?

Today, the old woolshed and the nearby shearers' quarters have been turned into places for visitors to stay. You can also find a museum, a cafe, and an art gallery there. There's even a caravan park right next to it, making it a great place for tourists to visit and learn about the past.

Protecting Nature at Mount Dutton Bay

The Mount Dutton Bay Conservation Park is located on islands within Mount Dutton Bay. It also includes other nearby bodies of water. This park helps protect the natural environment and wildlife in the area. It's a special place where nature can thrive.

The Original Name of Mount Dutton

The Aboriginal people, who are the traditional owners of this land, have their own name for "Mount Dutton." In the Barngarla language, it is called Miranda.
