Wangary is a small town located on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. It is about 45 kilometres (28 mi) west of the city of Port Lincoln. You can find Wangary along the Flinders Highway, close to Coffin Bay.

Wangary is a small community. In 2006, about 289 people lived there. The town is built around the freshwater Lake Wangary.

History of Wangary

Wangary has a long history, dating back to the 1800s. The area was first surveyed for a town in 1871. However, it was never officially declared a town.

Old Buildings and Landmarks

Many old buildings still stand in Wangary today. They tell stories of the past.

  • The Old Lake Wangary Hotel: This building was constructed in 1871. It used to be a hotel, but it stopped selling alcohol in 1933. Today, it is a general store where you can buy everyday items.
  • Former Post Office: The town had a post office that opened in 1862. It closed down in 1976. You can still see the ruins of this building.
  • Other Ruins: Near the old post office, you can find the remains of a coach house and a bakery. These buildings were important for the community long ago.

Lake Wangary Cemetery

The Lake Wangary Cemetery is a burial ground on Snapper Hill Road. It was first set up in 1882. It was used until the early 1900s. In 1984, it was re-surveyed to be a modern cemetery. The local council now takes care of it.
