Mount Holly Springs is a small town, called a borough, in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. It's about 25 miles north of Gettysburg, a famous historical place. In 2010, about 2,030 people lived there. Mount Holly Springs is part of the larger Harrisburg–Carlisle metropolitan statistical area.

Mount Holly Springs is in the southern part of Cumberland County. It sits at the northern base of the South Mountain range.

Natural Features of the Area

Mountain Creek flows right through the middle of the borough. It comes out of the mountains through a water gap. This gap is a natural opening between Mount Holly to the west and Keller Hill to the east.

Mountain Creek eventually flows into Yellow Breeches Creek. Yellow Breeches Creek then travels east to join the Susquehanna River.

Size and Surroundings

The U.S. Census Bureau states that the borough covers about 1.45 square miles (3.8 square kilometers) in total. Most of this area, about 1.36 square miles (3.5 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.09 square miles (0.2 square kilometers), is water.

Mount Holly Springs is completely surrounded by South Middleton Township. However, it is its own separate town with its own local government.

A Look Back at Mount Holly Springs' Past

Mount Holly Springs was first established in 1815. It was built in a valley of the South Mountain. Long ago, it was a popular place for people to visit because of its mineral springs. Even today, these springs still flow.

Early Industries

From the 1770s to 1855, iron furnaces and forges were very important here. They used the large amounts of iron ore found in the local area. There's a story that the first wrought iron cannon was made in a forge right here by a person named William Denning.

In 1940, the town also had a clothing factory and two paper mills. These businesses provided jobs for many people.

Mount Holly Park

In the early 1900s, Mount Holly Springs was home to a popular summer resort called Mount Holly Park. People would come from all over to enjoy the park. However, the park closed its doors in 1918.
