Discovering Mount Hood

Mount Hood was named to honor a brave person named Horace Hood. He was a naval officer who took part in a very important sea battle called the Battle of Jutland. Sadly, he lost his life during this battle.

The name "Mount Hood" officially became recognized in 1922. This decision was made by the Geographical Names Board of Canada. This group is responsible for giving official names to places all across Canada.

The very first time people successfully climbed to the top of Mount Hood was in 1953. A team of climbers, including J. Dodds and W. Lemmon, made this exciting first ascent.
