Mount Isto is the tallest mountain in the Brooks Range in Alaska, USA. It stands very tall at 8,976 feet (2,736 meters). This mountain is located in the eastern part of the Brooks Range. This area is also known as the Romanzof Mountains.
Mount Isto is about 5 miles (8 kilometers) south of Mount Hubley. Mount Hubley is the second highest peak in the Brooks Range.
About Mount Isto
Mount Isto is found inside the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is a large protected area for animals and nature. The mountain was named in 1966. It was named after Reynold E. (Pete) Isto. He was a civil engineer who worked for the U.S. Geological Survey. This government group studies the Earth and its maps.
Highest Peak in the Brooks Range
For a long time, people thought another mountain, Mount Chamberlin, was the tallest. But in 2014, new technology helped scientists measure the mountains again. These new measurements showed that Mount Isto is actually the highest peak. Mount Chamberlin is now ranked as the third tallest mountain in the Brooks Range.
