Mount Joy Pond Natural Area Preserve is a special protected area in Augusta County, Virginia. It covers about 274 acres (1.11 square kilometers) and is located on the western side of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This preserve is very important because it helps protect a rare plant called the Virginia sneezeweed. It also features a unique sinkhole pond, which is the main natural wonder of the area.

A Special Sinkhole Pond

The most important part of Mount Joy Pond Natural Area Preserve is its large sinkhole pond. A sinkhole is a natural hole or depression in the ground. This happens when the land above an underground cave collapses. The pond formed in one of these natural depressions.

There are fewer than two dozen such ponds left in Augusta and nearby Rockingham County. These ponds are unique habitats. They support special plants and animals. The land around the pond is mostly covered with hardwood and pine trees.

The Rare Virginia Sneezeweed

One of the most important plants found here is the Virginia sneezeweed (Helenium virginicum). This plant is very rare. It grows well in the wet conditions around the sinkhole pond. Protecting this plant is a key reason why Mount Joy Pond is a Natural Area Preserve.

Protecting the Pond

Since 2016, people who manage the preserve have been studying the sinkhole pond. They want to understand why the pond sometimes dries up by early fall. Old photos show that the pond used to hold water for longer periods.

To help the pond, managers are working on the surrounding forest. They are thinning out some trees. They also plan to use prescribed burning. This means carefully setting small fires. These actions help restore the natural water flow of the area. This way, the pond can stay wet for longer.

Who Manages the Preserve?

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation owns and takes care of Mount Joy Pond Natural Area Preserve. This department works hard to protect Virginia's natural places.

The preserve does not have special paths or facilities for visitors. If you want to visit, you need to make plans ahead of time. You must get permission from a state land steward. This helps protect the sensitive plants and animals living there.
