Mount Juneau (in the Tlingit language: Yadaa.at Kalé) is a large mountain that stands 3,576-foot (1,090 m) tall. It is located in Southeast Alaska, very close to downtown Juneau. This impressive mountain is part of the Boundary Ranges, a big group of mountains in the area.

Exploring Mount Juneau's Past

Mount Juneau has a rich and interesting past, especially connected to mining. People have been interested in its resources for a long time.

How Mount Juneau Got Its Name

In 1881, miners first called this mountain "Gold Mountain" because they hoped to find gold there. Later, around 1896, it was also known as "Bald Mountain." The name "Juneau Mountain" was first written down in mining records in 1888. A miner named Pierre "French Pete" Erussard used this name when he claimed land for mining on the mountain.

Plans for a Mountain Tramway

In 1976, a man named Chuck Keen had an idea to build a special cable car system, called an aerial tramway, to the very top of Mount Juneau. His company, Alaska Trams, wanted to make it easier for people to reach the summit. However, this project never happened. Instead, another company, Goldbelt Inc., built the Mount Roberts Tramway on the nearby Mount Roberts.

Mount Juneau experiences much more rain than downtown Juneau. It gets about three times as much rain! Downtown Juneau usually receives around 91 inches or 230 centimetres of rain each year.

Winter Dangers: Avalanches

During the winter, Mount Juneau can be a dangerous place because of avalanches. Avalanches are large slides of snow that can move very quickly down the mountain. This makes Mount Juneau one of the biggest avalanche risks for a major city like Juneau.

Reaching Mount Juneau's Summit

If you want to hike to the top of Mount Juneau, you can find the trail from the Perseverance Trail. The starting point for the Mount Juneau trail is about one mile (1.6 km) from the Perseverance Trailhead.

What to Expect on the Trail

The trail offers amazing views of the alpine areas, which are high up in the mountains. However, parts of the trail are very steep. It's important to be careful, especially if the weather is wet or snowy. Always be prepared and cautious when hiking in these conditions.
