Mount Miller is a tall mountain found in the Saint Elias Mountains in Alaska, United States. It stands out because it's very far from any towns. It's also surrounded by amazing ice fields.
This mountain is more than 65 miles (110 km) from McCarthy. McCarthy is the closest small community. It's even further, over 105 miles (170 km), from Yakutat. Yakutat is the nearest larger town. Mount Miller is huge! Its south side rises 9,000 feet (2,743 meters) from the Duktoth River valley. This big climb happens over about 9 miles (14.5 km) of flat ground.
Where is Mount Miller?
Mount Miller is the highest point on Barkley Ridge. This ridge runs from east to west. It is located on the south side of the Bagley Icefield. The Bagley Icefield is one of the biggest ice fields in North America.
Glaciers Around the Mountain
The Bering Glacier starts from the Bagley Icefield. It flows from the western end of Barkley Ridge. The southeast slopes of the ridge are where the Yahtse Glacier begins. The only part of the ridge not covered in ice is its south side. Here, the Robinson Mountains sit between Barkley Ridge and the Gulf of Alaska.
First Climb to the Top
Mount Miller is very remote. It is also not the absolute highest mountain in Alaska. Because of this, people didn't climb it until recently. The first time anyone reached the top was in 1997.
The First Climbers
A team of five climbers made the first successful trip. They were Charlie Sassara, Ruedi Homberger, Reto Ruesh, Paul Claus, and Carlos Buhler. They climbed Mount Miller using a path called the West Ridge.
