About Mount Nivelle

Mount Nivelle is a majestic peak that marks the boundary between two Canadian provinces. It sits directly on the Continental Divide, which is like a giant natural line that separates which way rivers flow. On one side, water flows towards the Pacific Ocean, and on the other, it flows towards the Atlantic or Arctic Oceans.

Why is it Called Nivelle?

Mount Nivelle was given its name in 1918. It was named after Marshal Robert Nivelle, a very important French general during World War I. A marshal is a high-ranking military officer. This area has several mountains named after French generals from that war.

Other mountains nearby also honor these historical figures. They include Cordonnier, Foch, Joffre, Mangin, Sarrail, and Pétain. This group of names helps remember the leaders who played a big part in the First World War.

First Climbers of Mount Nivelle

The first recorded climb to the top of Mount Nivelle happened in 1928. The climb was made by J.W.A. Hickson. He was guided by Edward Feuz Jr., who was a well-known mountain guide at the time. Guides often help climbers find the safest and best ways to reach a mountain's summit.
