Mount Northover is a mountain located right on the border between Alberta and British Columbia in Canada. It sits on the Continental Divide, which is a natural line that separates rivers flowing to different oceans. The mountain is named after a brave soldier, Lieutenant A.W. Northover. The closest taller mountain is Mount Lyautey, which is about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) away to the north-northeast.
Naming Mount Northover
Mount Northover was named in 1917. It honors Lieutenant A.W. Northover, M.C. He was a soldier from the Canadian Expeditionary Force (C.E.F.). Lieutenant Northover was one of western Canada's first war heroes. He had recently moved to Canada from the United Kingdom and started a new family there.
A Brave Soldier
Lieutenant Northover was a veteran of the Boer War. He joined the North-West Battalion in Regina. He served with the 28th Battalion, C.E.F. He earned the Military Cross for his brave actions on October 8, 1915. The Military Cross is an award for bravery during battle. In 1916, he returned to Canada for a speaking tour. During this tour, he visited his relatives in Edmonton.
