History of Mount Olive
The town of Mount Olive officially became a town on May 18, 1900. This makes it older than some nearby towns like Magee and Collins. The railroad tracks, which were important for travel and trade, were finished in 1899, just before the town was incorporated.
Geography of Mount Olive
Mount Olive is located in the beautiful state of Mississippi. A major road called U.S. Route 49 runs along the west side of the town. This highway can take you about 52 miles northwest to Jackson, which is the capital city of Mississippi. You can also travel about 38 miles southeast to Hattiesburg.
Another road, Mississippi Highway 35, goes through the southern part of town. It leads northeast about 10 miles to Mize and southwest about 39 miles to Columbia.
The town covers an area of about 8.0 square kilometers (or 3.1 square miles). All of this area is land. Mount Olive is situated in the valley of Okatoma Creek, which is a stream that flows into the Pascagoula River.
