Fun Things to Do at Mont Olivine
Mont Olivine is a popular place for hiking and snowshoeing. It has a trail that's considered intermediate, meaning it's not too easy but also not super hard.
Hiking the Trail
The hiking trail to the top is about 10.93 kilometres (6.79 mi) long. You'll climb about 481 metres (1,578 ft) in elevation. A hike usually takes around 5 and a half hours. The very top of the mountain is at 663 metres (2,175 ft) high.
Winter Adventures
In winter, Mont Olivine is one of the few mountains in the area where you can go snowshoeing. It takes longer in the snow, about 9 hours and 45 minutes.
Amazing Views from the Top
When you reach the top of Mont Olivine, the view is absolutely incredible! The summit is bare, so there are no trees blocking your sight. You can see the nearby Mount Albert clearly from here.
Starting Your Adventure
The hiking trail begins at the Discovery and Visitors Center in Gaspésie National Park. From there, you'll follow the "La Grande Traversée" trail heading west. Make sure to look for signs pointing towards Mont Olivine.
The Trail's Journey
At first, the trail follows the Sainte-Anne River. This part is pretty flat and easy. After about three kilometers, near a spot called Devil's Fall, the climb gets a bit tougher.
After a big part of the climb, you'll reach a crossroads. Take the path to the left to go to the top of Mont Olivine. Along the way, you can enjoy views of the Mount Albert plateau. To get back, you just follow the same path in reverse.
What's in a Name?
The name "Mont Olivine" comes from a cool discovery. A prospector, someone who searches for minerals, found a mineral called olivine near Mount Albert.
About Olivine
Olivine is a green mineral that has a lot of magnesium in it. It belongs to a group of minerals called silicates. It's pretty neat that a mountain is named after a mineral found nearby!
Official Name
The name "Mont Olivine" was officially recognized on February 7, 1989. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like a special group that names places in Quebec.
