What's in a Name?
From Stalin to Peck
For many years, until 1987, this mountain was known as Mount Stalin. But its name was changed to Mount Peck to honor Don Peck. Don Peck was a local person who worked as a trapper, guide, and outfitter in the area.
Why the Name Change Happened
The change from Mount Stalin to Mount Peck was supported by a group called the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association. Two people, Dr. Lubomyr Luciuk and Dr. Bohdan Kordan, helped make this change happen. The original name, Mount Stalin, was linked to a historical leader named Joseph Stalin. He was the leader of the Soviet Union for a long time. Many places named after him were later renamed because of the difficult history associated with his rule. This process of changing names is sometimes called "De-Stalinization." Changing the mountain's name was a way to recognize a local hero instead.
