Tower of London Range facts for kids
The Tower of London Range is a group of mountains found in the northern part of British Columbia, Canada. It's a smaller section of the huge Northern Rocky Mountains. You can find it northwest of the Tuchodi Lakes, right at the edge of the Northern Rocky Mountains Provincial Park. It's also southwest of the town of Fort Nelson.
Why is it Called the Tower of London Range?
This mountain range got its unique name from the famous Tower of London in England. Many of its peaks are named after towers and buildings found within the historic Tower of London itself.
Who Named the Mountains?
The names were given by a group of explorers during an expedition in 1959 and 1960. These explorers were members of the City of London Regiment of the Royal Fusiliers, a British army unit. Their leader was Captain M.F.R. Jones.
Mountains with Famous Names
Several mountains in the range are named after parts of the Tower of London. For example:
- Tower Mountain looks over the southern end of Wokkpash Lake.
- There are also South Bastion Mountain and North Bastion Mountain.
- You can find Constable Peak and The White Tower.
Other names in the area are also connected to the expedition. These include Fusilier Peak and Fusiliers Glacier, named after the Royal Fusiliers regiment.
