Mount Raleigh: A Giant Peak in Canada

Mount Raleigh is one of the highest mountains in its area. It is located in a rugged part of British Columbia. This peak is found near where the Southgate River and Bishop River meet. It is also northeast of the top part of Bute Inlet.

The mountain is the tallest peak south of the Bishop River's divide. This divide connects to the Lillooet River at Ring Pass. This area is also close to the edge of the Lillooet Icefield. Mount Raleigh is a challenging climb, often requiring rock and ice climbing skills. The first people to reach its summit were R. Hutchinson, J. Woodfield, J. Owen, and W. Himmelsbach in 1959.

How Mount Raleigh Got Its Name

Mount Raleigh is named after Sir Walter Raleigh. He was a famous English explorer, writer, and soldier from the 1500s. This mountain is part of a group of peaks in the area named after people from the time of Queen Elizabeth I of England.

Other Mountains with Royal Names

The tallest mountain in this group is Mount Queen Bess. It stands at 3,298 meters (about 10,820 feet) high. It is fittingly named after Queen Elizabeth I herself. Just south of Mount Raleigh is Mount Gilbert. This peak is named after Sir Humphrey Gilbert, who was Sir Walter Raleigh's step-brother and also an explorer.

A bit further south and west, you will find Tavistock Mountain. This mountain is named after Tavistock, a town in England. It is the birthplace of Sir Walter Raleigh.

Who Named These Mountains?

Many of these names were given in the 1930s by R.P. Bishop. The Bishop River is named after him. He named Mount Raleigh and Mount Sir Francis Drake. Sir Francis Drake was another famous English explorer from the same time period.

Other mountains in the area were named later. For example, Mount Sussex, Oriana Peak, and Madrigal Mountain were named in the 1980s. These names were suggested by the Alpine Club of Canada. This club is a group of people who love climbing and exploring mountains.
