The lake helps cool down the Mount Storm Power Station. This power station makes a lot of electricity. It provides power for over two million homes in Northern Virginia. Mount Storm Lake is very high up. It sits about 3,244 feet (989 m) above sea level.
Fun Things to Do at Mount Storm Lake
Mount Storm Lake is a great place for both local people and visitors. The power station keeps the lake water warm. This means you can swim and boat even when it's cool outside! The water is super clear. You can often see the bottom, even several feet down.
Diving and Exploring Underwater
Because the water is warm, Mount Storm Lake is a popular spot for scuba divers. Divers come here to practice and explore. In summer, the water can be in the 80s or 90s Fahrenheit. It rarely gets below 50 degrees in winter.
The lake has special platforms for divers. These platforms are at different depths. They are at 30, 50, 75, and 120 feet deep. Divers use these platforms to test their gear. They also use them to keep their skills sharp and enjoy a dive.
Sailing and Wind Fun
Mount Storm Lake is located on the Allegheny Front. This area is one of the windiest places east of the Mississippi River. This makes the lake perfect for small boat sailing.
There is a public boat ramp at the north end of the lake. You can find it just off West Virginia Route 93. If you look around the lake, you can see more than 40 wind turbines. They are big towers that use wind to make electricity.
