Mountain is a small place in Ritchie County, West Virginia, United States. It is an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially part of a city or town. Mountain is located in the very northeastern part of Ritchie County. It sits along West Virginia Route 74 and the Hughes River. This community is about 6.2 miles (10 km) north-northeast of Pennsboro.

What's in a Name?

Before 1949, this community was known by a different name: Mole Hill. That's right, Mole Hill! In 1949, the people living there decided to change the name to Mountain. This was part of a fun idea, almost like a publicity stunt. They wanted to literally "make a mountain out of a molehill." This is an idiom that means to make a big deal out of something small.

Is There a Mountain?

Despite its current name, there isn't actually a mountain in or even near the community of Mountain. You can't see a mountain from there! The original name, Mole Hill, probably came from a local family named Mole.

Community Life

Like many small communities, Mountain has seen some changes over the years. For example, its post office, which helped people send and receive mail, closed down on November 9, 2002.
