The Mountain Lakes train station is a stop on the NJ Transit railway system. It is located in Mountain Lakes, Morris County, New Jersey, United States. This station is part of the Montclair-Boonton Line.

The station has one track and a low platform where you get on and off the train. You can find the Mountain Lakes station on Midvale Road, not far from Interstate 287. The old stone station building, built by the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad long ago, is now a restaurant called The Station at Mountain Lakes.

History of the Mountain Lakes Station

Early Train Services

Trains first started serving the Mountain Lakes area in 1869. Back then, the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad used the Boonton Branch mainly for carrying goods. This route went through Paterson. It was built to offer a different path than the passenger-focused Morris & Essex Railroad.

Building the New Station

In May 1912, construction began on a brand new station in Mountain Lakes. This new building was meant to replace an older stop called Fox Hill station. Workers continued building until November of the same year, when the new station officially opened.

A Historic Landmark

The Mountain Lakes station is considered an important historical site. It is listed on the Morris County Inventory of Historic Sites. On September 7, 2005, the station was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This happened as part of the larger Mountain Lakes Historic District. The New Jersey State Historical Preservation Office had already recognized the district two months earlier, on July 22, 2005.

Understanding the Station Layout

The Mountain Lakes station has one low-level platform. A low-level platform means it's close to the ground, so you step up into the train.

Trains traveling away from Hoboken or New York (usually in the afternoon rush hour) head towards Hackettstown. This direction passes through Denville.

Trains traveling towards Hoboken or New York (usually in the morning rush hour) pass through Boonton. When you are on the platform, the train doors will open on either the left or right side, depending on the train. At the street level, you can find ticket machines and parking for the station.
