The mouse-coloured tapaculo or Serra do Mar tapaculo (Scytalopus speluncae) is a small bird that belongs to the family Rhinocryptidae. These birds are known for being quite secretive. This tapaculo lives only in certain areas of southeastern Brazil. It prefers humid forests high up in the mountains.

You can find the mouse-coloured tapaculo from southwestern Espírito Santo to northeastern Rio Grande do Sul. Most of them live in the Serra do Mar mountain range. However, some also live further inland in Paraná and Santa Catarina. Before 2005, another bird, the Planalto tapaculo, was thought to be the same species as the mouse-coloured tapaculo.

Scientists sometimes have different ideas about how to name and group animals. This bird's taxonomy (how it's classified) has been quite tricky.

About the Mouse-coloured Tapaculo

The mouse-coloured tapaculo is a small, dark grey bird. Most tapaculos in the Scytalopus group are grey, which is why this one is called "mouse-coloured." They are often hard to spot because they live in dense forests and tend to stay hidden.

Scientific Names and Discovery

Scientists use special scientific names for animals. These names help everyone around the world know exactly which animal they are talking about. The scientific name for the mouse-coloured tapaculo is Scytalopus speluncae.

In 2005, scientists found that what they thought was one species of mouse-coloured tapaculo was actually two different ones! The southern group was named a new species, S. pachecoi. The northern group kept the name S. speluncae.

Why Names Can Be Tricky

Sometimes, scientists debate which scientific name is the correct one for a species. This happened with the mouse-coloured tapaculo. The original description of S. speluncae was made in 1835 by Édouard Ménétries. For a while, there was confusion about whether this name should apply to the darker birds of the Serra do Mar region or to a paler group of birds from the Espinhaço Mountains.

After much research, scientists decided that the name S. speluncae correctly belongs to the darker birds found in the Serra do Mar region. The paler birds from the Espinhaço Mountains were later described as a new species called S. petrophilus. This shows how careful scientists are to make sure each animal has the right name.

Scientists are still studying these birds. They believe there might be even more types of Scytalopus tapaculos in eastern Brazil that haven't been officially named yet.

English Names

The mouse-coloured tapaculo is also known as the Serra do Mar tapaculo. Both names have some small issues. "Mouse-coloured" can be confusing because many tapaculos are mouse-grey. Also, the name "Serra do Mar tapaculo" isn't perfect because the bird lives outside the Serra do Mar mountains too, in places like Paraná and Santa Catarina. Despite these small issues, these names help us talk about this unique bird.
