Moussa Faki Mahamat (Arabic: موسى فقي محمد; born on June 21, 1960) is an important politician and diplomat from Chad. He served as the leader of the African Union Commission from 2017 to 2025. This is a very big role, like being the head of a major international organization.

Before leading the African Union, he was the Prime Minister of Chad from 2003 to 2005. He also served as Chad's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2008 to 2017. Moussa Faki is a member of the Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS), which is the ruling political party in Chad. He belongs to the Zaghawa ethnic group.

In February 2021, he was re-elected to lead the African Union Commission for another four-year term, which ended in 2024.

Early Life and Education

Moussa Faki was born in a town called Biltine in eastern Chad. He later went to university in Brazzaville, which is the capital city of the Republic of the Congo. There, he studied law, which is the system of rules a country uses.

Time in Exile

In 1982, a new leader named Hissein Habré took power in Chad. Because of this, Moussa Faki had to leave the country and live in exile. He joined a group called the Democratic Revolutionary Council. He did not return to Chad until 1991, after Idriss Déby became president.

Career in Chad

After returning to Chad, Moussa Faki held several important positions. He worked as a director-general in two different government ministries. From 1996 to 1999, he was the Director-General of the National Sugar Company (SONASUT).

Working for the President

From 1999 to 2002, he worked closely with President Déby as the Director of the President's Cabinet. He also managed President Déby's election campaign in 2001. These roles showed his growing importance in Chadian politics.

Becoming Prime Minister

In June 2002, Moussa Faki was appointed as the Minister of Public Works and Transport. Just a year later, in June 2003, President Déby chose him to be the Prime Minister of Chad. He served in this high office until February 2005.

Role in Foreign Affairs

After his time as Prime Minister, Moussa Faki continued to serve his country. In 2007, he became the President of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council. Then, in April 2008, he was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He held this position for many years, until January 2017.

Leading the African Union

On March 14, 2017, Moussa Faki took on his biggest role yet: Chairperson of the African Union Commission. The African Union is an organization of 55 member states in Africa. Its goal is to promote unity, peace, and development across the continent. As Chairperson, Moussa Faki was responsible for leading the AU's daily work and representing it on the world stage.
