Mr. Young is a funny Canadian TV show. It first aired on March 1, 2011, on YTV. The show was filmed in Burnaby, British Columbia. Dan Signer created the series. He also worked on other popular shows.

The main actors are Brendan Meyer, Matreya Fedor, and Gig Morton. They play students at Finnegan High School. The show ran for three seasons. It had 80 episodes in total. The final episode aired on November 28, 2013.

About the Show

Mr. Young is about a super smart kid named Adam Young. He is played by Brendan Meyer. Adam finished university when he was only 14 years old. He decides to go back to high school. But this time, he's a science teacher! He wants to experience high school life.

Adam meets his old friend Derby (Gig Morton). He also deals with the school bully, Slab (Kurt Ostlund). Plus, he has a crush on a student in his class, Echo (Matreya Fedor). Since Adam is only 14, his students don't always respect him. He often gets into trouble with the principal. This is because he sometimes acts like a kid himself.

Main Characters

  • Brendan Meyer as Adam Young. Adam teaches science at Finnegan High School. He wants to live the high school life he missed. He graduated early and didn't get to go to high school. But high school life is tough for him. He's not great at social skills. Adam also has a crush on his student, Echo. Derby often tries to help Adam impress Echo. These plans usually fail because Derby acts without thinking. Adam and Echo finally kiss in a special episode. In the last episode, Adam leaves Finnegan. He starts working as a professor at a local university.
  • Matreya Fedor as Echo Zizzleswift. Echo is a student in Adam's science class. She cares a lot about the environment. She is also very thoughtful and socially aware. Echo secretly loves science-fiction. She is good friends with Adam, Ivy, Derby, and Slab. Adam likes her, but she doesn't seem to notice at first. They realize they like each other in an episode called "Mr. Double Date." They share a kiss in the special episode, "Mr. First Impression." Echo has a pet hamster named Mr. Tickleschmootz. In the finale, she graduates and joins Adam's class at the university.
  • Gig Morton as Derby von Derbotsford. Derby is a student at Finnegan High School. He's not the smartest kid. He has a crush on Ivy, Adam's sister. But Ivy always ignores him. Derby loves wearing costumes. He also hosts a radio show called "Drive Time with Derby." Derby is Adam's best friend and also his student. He often falls asleep in Adam's class. Derby is a class clown. He's good at pranks, using the name "Gagmeister General." The principal never figures out who the Gagmeister is. In the finale, Derby graduates and joins Adam's class at the university.
  • Kurt Ostlund as Jordan 'Slab' Slabinsky. Slab is the school bully. He seems tough, but he secretly likes ballet and looking at stars. He also values friendship. Slab often pranks people, especially nerds. He says he does it to hide his true feelings. Even though he bullies Derby, he sometimes helps him. Slab is afraid of milk. He has many pets, all named Slab Jr. In "Mr. Memory," he starts dating Ivy. After 12 years, Slab finally graduates in the finale. He then attends Adam's science class at the university.
  • Emily Tennant as Ivy Young. Ivy is Adam's older sister. She can be rude and loves shopping. She often tells Adam what to do. Ivy can be rude to many people, even teachers. But deep down, she cares about Adam and others. She used to like Hutch Anderson. Later, she starts dating Slab. Ivy is seen as very attractive by the boys. In the final episode, it's revealed she was a senior for three years. She also works for the school newspaper with Echo. She finally graduates and joins her brother's class at the university.
  • Milo Shandel as Principal George Tater. Principal Tater is the head of Finnegan High School. He often checks on Mr. Young's class. He can be suspicious and a bit silly. He is afraid of cinnamon because of something that happened when he was a kid. He calls his mother "mommy." Many students don't respect him. It's hinted that he might be Adam and Ivy's father. In the finale, he admits he enjoyed Adam's teaching. He says Adam made high school fun.

Other Characters

  • Raugi Yu as Dang. Dang is the school janitor. He appears very quickly when someone says his name. He is very skilled at martial arts. Dang loves leaf monkeys and Halloween. He often calls robots "steel demons." He sometimes wears a big purple cowboy hat. He calls it his "Fancy Hat." Dang lives at Finnegan High. He doesn't want to leave because leaf monkeys don't live there. He has a twin brother named Ding. In the finale, Dang earns his high school diploma. He then attends Adam's science class at the university.
  • Paula Shaw as Ms. Byrne. Ms. Byrne is an older history teacher. She is in charge of the science club. She also runs the school newspaper. Ms. Byrne has a very bad memory. She often forgets things quickly. She always teaches about the War of 1812. She starts by asking, "Who has heard of the War of 1812?" All the students raise their hands. It's suggested she is extremely old. She claims to have seen Halley's Comet six times. She also uses old tools, like an abacus instead of a computer. In the finale, she drinks water from the Fountain of Youth. She becomes young for a short time.
  • Anna Galvin as Rachel Young. Rachel is Ivy and Adam's mother. She delivers meals to older people. She can sometimes be helpful. Rachel can also be dishonest. She once sold Adam's comic books without telling him. She was schoolmates with Principal Tater. She was once a cheerleader at Finnegan High.

Making the Show

Dan Signer created Mr. Young. He was also an executive producer. The show was filmed in front of a live audience. This happened at 5828 Byrne Road in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Filming for the first season started on September 30, 2010. It finished on April 15, 2011. On March 31, 2011, YTV announced Mr. Young was their most popular show. The show was renewed for a second season on April 29, 2011. Filming for Season 2 began in July 2011 and ended in January 2012. The show then had a third and final season of 28 episodes. This brought the total to 80 episodes. The last season aired from October 16, 2012, to November 28, 2013.

Where It Aired

On September 7, 2011, Corus Entertainment's Nelvana Enterprises and Thunderbird Films sold the show. It was sold to Disney XD channels in many countries. These included the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. Nelvana Enterprises handles worldwide distribution for Mr. Young.
