The Mt. Olive Road Covered Bridge is a special old bridge in Vinton County, Ohio, United States. It's a type of bridge called a covered bridge, which means it has walls and a roof. This bridge is found northeast of Allensville. It helps Mt. Olive Road cross a valley in the northwest part of Vinton County. Long ago, this road was very important. Before about 1825, many travelers used it to go between Marietta and Chillicothe.

What Makes the Mt. Olive Road Bridge Special?

This bridge was built in 1875. It sits on strong stone supports called piers. A metal roof covers the bridge, protecting it from the weather. The inside of the bridge uses a simple design called a queen post truss. This design helps the bridge hold up weight.

Who Built the Bridge?

A local engineer named George Washington Pilcher built the Mt. Olive Road Covered Bridge. He was a very important engineer in southeastern Ohio. Mr. Pilcher also helped build many other covered bridges in Vinton County. He even worked on Manasseh Cutler Hall at Ohio University.

Why Is It Called the Grandstaff Bridge?

When the bridge was first built, a family named "Grandstaff" owned a lot of land nearby. Because their land was all around the bridge, some people started calling it the "Grandstaff Bridge." Even though it had another name, "Mt. Olive Road Bridge" is the name that stuck.

Becoming a Historic Landmark

In 1973, the Mt. Olive Road Bridge was named a historic site. This means it's an important place from the past. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This is a special list of places that are important to history. Two other covered bridges in Vinton County are also on this list. The Mt. Olive Road Bridge earned this honor for two main reasons. First, its engineering design is very old but still in great shape. Second, it played an important part in the history of Ohio.
