H. Muammar Zainal Asyikin (born June 14, 1954), often called Muammar ZA, is a very famous Qari and Hafiz from Indonesia. A Qari is someone who recites the Quran beautifully. A Hafiz is someone who has memorized the entire Quran. Muammar ZA is known both in Indonesia and around the world for his amazing voice.
He became famous in the 1980s by winning many Quran recitation contests. These contests are called "Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran" (MTQ). People say he has one of the longest breath capacities in the world. This helps him recite the Quran for a long time without stopping.

A Master of Quran Recitation
Muammar ZA's talent was clear from a young age. In 1962, when he was just 7 years old, he won a local Quran competition. This happened in his hometown of Pemalang, Indonesia.
Winning Competitions
He continued to win many more competitions.
- In 1967, he won first place in the MTQ for Jogjakarta Province.
- He then won national MTQ contests in 1972 and 1973. He represented Jogjakarta province in these big events.
- His skills were recognized internationally too. He won international Quran recitation contests in 1979 and 1986.
Reciting Around the World
Because of his many wins, Muammar ZA was invited to recite the Quran in many important places. He has recited in the Istana Nurul Iman in Brunei. He also performed at the National Palace of Malaysia. His talent took him to countries across the Middle East. In 2004, he was invited to recite in Turkey. He also visited Pakistan in 2009 to recite the Quran there.
Background and Family Life
Qari Muammar is the seventh of ten children. His parents, H. Zainal Asykin and Hj. Mu’minatul Afifah, were important religious figures in their village. Muammar was born in the Moga district. This area is about 40 kilometers south of Pemalang Regency in Central Java.
Family and Education
Muammar has a younger brother, Imron Rosyadi Z.A. Imron has also become a Qari, following in his famous brother's footsteps. In 1984, Muammar married Syarifah Nadiya from Aceh. They have five children: one daughter and four sons.
In 2002, Muammar ZA started an Islamic boarding school. It is called "Pesantren Ummul Qura." This school is located in Cipondoh, Tangerang. His goal was to train young people to become professional Qaris.
