Mudge Island is a small island located in the Strait of Georgia, off the coast of British Columbia (BC), Canada. It is one of the many beautiful Gulf Islands found in this area. Mudge Island sits between two larger islands, Gabriola Island and Vancouver Island. It is also part of a smaller group of islands called the De Courcy Islands. The island is about 0.8 kilometers (0.5 miles) wide and 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) long.

What is Mudge Island Named After?

Mudge Island got its name from a man named William Fitzwilliam Mudge. He was an officer on a ship called HMS Plumper. In 1859, the ship's captain, George Henry Richards, explored and mapped many of the islands and other places in this region. As he did so, he named many of them, including Mudge Island, after people involved in his expedition.

Life on Mudge Island

Mudge Island is a quiet place where people live. About 60 people call the island home all year round. However, during the summer months, the population grows to over 200 people as more visitors and seasonal residents arrive.

Getting to Mudge Island

One interesting fact about Mudge Island is that there are no public bridges or ferry services connecting it to the mainland or other islands. This means that residents and visitors usually travel to the island by private boat. There is a private marina on the island called Moonshine Cove, which helps people access the island.

Homes and Services

Mudge Island is mainly a residential area, meaning it's mostly made up of homes. While there aren't many big businesses, some residents run small businesses right from their houses. The island has several dirt roads that connect the different homes. Even though it's a smaller island, Mudge Island has modern services like electricity, telephone, and cable television. This is quite special, as many other smaller islands in the De Courcy group do not have all these services.
