Muenster (pronounced MUN-stər) is a small city in Cooke County, Texas, in the United States. It is located along U.S. Route 82. In 2020, about 1,536 people lived there. Muenster is known for its strong German heritage. Many of its residents have German roots.

History of Muenster

Muenster was founded in 1889. It was started by two German Catholic brothers, Carl and Emil Flusche. They invited other German Catholics to come and settle there.

Before Muenster, the town was going to be called "Westphalia." However, another town in Texas already had that name. So, the settlers chose "Muenster" instead. This name honored Münster, a city in Germany.

For many years, people in Muenster spoke German every day. This changed after the First World War. The German language was no longer taught in schools. Because of this, fewer people spoke it over time.

More than 90% of the people in Muenster are of German heritage and Catholic. The city still keeps many German traditions alive. Local shops make traditional German foods, like those found in a Bäckerei (bakery).

Each April, Muenster hosts a special event called Germanfest. This festival celebrates German culture with food, music, and races. Another popular event is the Christkindlmarkt. This German-style Christmas market happens every year on Thanksgiving weekend.

Religion was very important to the first settlers. They built a school even before they built a church. That school, Sacred Heart Catholic School, is still open today. It is one of only three high schools in the Fort Worth Diocese. The city also has the public Muenster Independent School District.
