Early Life and Education
Muhammad Abdul Wahhab was born in Delhi, which was part of British India at the time. This was in the year 1923. His family came from the Karnal District.
He went to Islamia College in Lahore. After finishing college, he worked as a tehsildar. This was a government job where he collected taxes and managed land records.
When he was young, he also worked with a group called Majlis-e-Ahrar-e-Islam. He was the president of their branch in Burewala. A respected teacher named Abdul Qadir Raipuri also greatly influenced him.
His Work as a Preacher
Joining Tablighi Jamaat
Abdul Wahhab joined the Tablighi Jamaat when its founder, Muhammad Ilyas Kandhlawi, was still alive. He arrived at the group's main center in Nizamuddin, India, on January 1, 1944. He spent about six months learning from Maulana Ilyas.
He decided to leave his job to dedicate all his time to the Tablighi Jamaat. He was one of the first five people in Pakistan to commit their entire lives to this work. He learned directly from important leaders like Maulana Muhammad Ilyas Kandhlawi, Yusuf Kandhlawi, and Inamul Hasan Kandhlawi.
Leadership in Pakistan
The first regular leader (amir) of the Tablighi Jamaat in Pakistan was Muhammad Shafi Quraishi. After him, Haji Muhammad Bashir became the leader. Abdul Wahhab then became the third regular amir for Pakistan.
He was based at Raiwind Markaz. This is the main headquarters for the Tablighi Jamaat in Pakistan. There, he led a shura, which is a council that makes decisions for the group. He was also part of the alami shura, which is the world council for the movement. This world council is based in Nizamuddin, India.
He also had a connection to the Qadiriyah Sufi order. This was through his teacher, Shaykh Abdul Qadir Raipuri.
Passing Away
Haji Abdul Wahhab passed away on November 18, 2018. He was buried on the same day. His burial took place in a graveyard next to the Tableeghi Markaz (Headquarter) in Raiwind.
