Sheikh Muhammad-Hasan Abu al-Mahasin (born in 1875, died in 1923) was an important Iraqi poet and politician. He is most famous for his part in the Iraqi revolt of 1920. This was a big uprising against the British who were in charge of Iraq at the time.

Who Was Muhammad-Hasan Abu al-Mahasin?

Muhammad-Hasan Abu al-Mahasin was born in the city of Karbala in 1875. His family had moved to Karbala from a place called Janaja, near Hilla. They became well-known in Karbala, especially after marrying into the Nasrallah family. His family was part of the Al-Ali tribe, which is a branch of the Bani Malik tribe.

A Leader in the Iraqi Revolution

Abu al-Mahasin was a key leader in the Iraqi revolution. This revolution happened during and after World War I. It was a fight against the British who had taken control of Iraq.

He became a representative for Mirza Taqi al-Shirazi, who was a very respected religious leader. Abu al-Mahasin led a group called the Revolutionary Council in 1920. This council helped organize the uprising.

After Iraq gained its independence, Abu al-Mahasin became the Minister of Education. This was in the first national government under King Faisal I in 1922.

A Poet's Legacy

Abu al-Mahasin was also a famous poet. A "diwan" is a collection of a poet's works. His student, Sheikh Muhammad-Ali al-Yaqubi, published his diwan in 1966. It was called Diwan Abi al-Mahasin al-Karbalaei.

He wrote many poems about pan-Arabism. This is the idea of all Arab nations working together. His poems often spoke about the pride and glory of Arab people. One of his well-known lines translates to:

فمتى تؤلف وحدة عربية
وطنيه الإصدار والإيراد
ليس العراق بموطني هو وحده
فبلاد قومي كلهن بلادي

When will there be Arab unity,
A patriotic notion of giving and taking.
Iraq is not my country alone,
For the Arab nations are all my country

This poem shows his strong belief in Arab unity. He felt that all Arab lands were his home, not just Iraq.
