Major (Retd.) Muhammad Nawaz Khan (born November 23, 1943 – died October 3, 2015) was a talented Pakistani writer, historian, and poet. He wrote in English, Pashto, and Urdu. His main focus was the history of the Pashtuns people, the ancient Gandhara civilization, and the impact of British rule in Pakistan, especially in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region.
Serving in the Army
Muhammad Nawaz Khan joined the Pakistan Military Academy in 1965. He became a cadet right after the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. After one year, he graduated and joined the Frontier Force Regiment as a Second Lieutenant.
Nawaz served in the Pakistan Army for 25 years. He was in the army from 1966 until 1991. He retired with the rank of Major. During his time in the army, he was the Second in Command (2IC) of his unit.
He also attended the Pakistan Command and Staff College in Quetta. He graduated from there in 1977. Later, he worked as the Wing Commander at Balahisar Fort in Peshawar. This fort was the main office for the Frontier Corps.
While at Balahisar Fort, Major Nawaz was also the official historian for the Frontier Corps. He wrote short histories about the fort. These stories are now on 12 plaques around the fort. The plaques help visitors learn about the fort's history and interesting facts about life there long ago.
Becoming a Writer
Major Nawaz was also very active in writing and cultural groups. When he was a student, he edited the Pashto section of Khirman. This was a journal from the College of Agriculture, Peshawar University.
He was a member of several important groups. These included the National Heritage Foundation and the Pakistan Heritage Society. He also helped protect the environment and culture of the Kalash people.
Major Nawaz took part in many events about cultural heritage and tourism. He also managed Gandhara Markaz, which published books and brochures. In 2003, he started the Major Nawaz Research Trust. This trust was created to help other researchers and scholars.
He worked on many history and tourism projects. He helped groups like the Frontier Corps, Pakistan Army, and Pakistan Air Force. He also worked with Pakistan Television Corporation and the Sarhad Tourism Corporation.
The Gandhara Times Newspaper
From 1992 to 1996, Major Nawaz started his own newspaper. It was called The Gandhara Times. This newspaper came out every two weeks. Its main goal was to help save cultural heritage and promote tourism in Pakistan. All copies of this newspaper have been kept for people to read and learn from.
Later Life and Passing
Major Nawaz had a long illness called Parkinson's disease since the mid-1990s. In May 2014, his health became much worse after he fell and broke his elbow. This injury was a big challenge because he was already weak from his illness.
He was bedridden for more than a year. After fighting Parkinson's disease for almost 20 years, Major Nawaz passed away. He died in Risalpur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, on October 3, 2015.
