Abu Abdallah Muhammad V (Arabic: أبو عبد الله محمد الخامس) (born January 4, 1339 – died January 16, 1391) was an important ruler. He was known by his special name al-Ghani bi'llah (Arabic: الغني بالله, romanized: al-Ghanī bi-ʾllāh, lit. 'He who is contented with God'). Muhammad V was the eighth Nasrid leader of the Emirate of Granada. This was a Muslim kingdom in Al-Andalus, located on the Iberian Peninsula.
Muhammad V was the oldest son of Sultan Yusuf I. His mother was a woman named Butayna. He also had a younger sister and several half-siblings. He ruled Granada two times. His first rule was from 1354 to 1359. His second rule lasted much longer, from 1362 to 1391. He is famous for finishing parts of the beautiful Alhambra palace. This includes the amazing Palace of the Lions and the Mexuar.

Becoming Sultan of Granada
Muhammad V became sultan after his father, Yusuf I, died. But in August 1359, his half-brother Ismail II took over the throne. Muhammad V had to leave Granada. He found safety with the Marinid sultan in Fez. While there, he saw new styles of architecture. This inspired him.
Less than a year later, in 1360, Ismail II was removed from power. His brother-in-law, Abu Said, became the new ruler. Abu Said ruled as Muhammad VI. But Muhammad V soon returned to take back his throne.
Muhammad V Returns to Power
During the three years Muhammad VI was in charge, Muhammad V planned his return. In 1362, he got his chance. King Peter I of Castile (also called Pedro the Cruel) invited Muhammad VI to his kingdom. There, in Seville, Muhammad VI was removed from power and died. This helped Muhammad V return to the throne. He then ruled for another 29 years.
To show good relations with the Marinid kingdom, Muhammad V's oldest son, Yusuf II, married a Marinid princess.
Building and Learning
In 1365, Sultan Muhammad V ordered the building of the Maristan of Granada. This was a hospital located near his Alhambra palace. It was one of the first hospitals in Europe to also care for people with mental illness.
Muhammad V also worked with a famous scholar and diplomat named Ibn Khaldun. Ibn Khaldun helped with talks between Muhammad V and King Pedro the Cruel.
Death of Muhammad V
Muhammad V died on January 16, 1391. He had at least four sons. Their names were Yusuf II, Nasr, Muhammad, and Sa'd. His son, Yusuf II, became the next sultan after him.
