Mulga is a small town located in western Jefferson County, Alabama, in the United States. It sits just north of Pleasant Grove, which is a suburb of Birmingham. The town also includes the community of Bayview.
Mulga began as a "company town," meaning it was built and run by a company, the Birmingham Coal and Iron Company. This company operated the Mulga Mine nearby. Mulga also existed as an independent community. The company town officially became an incorporated town in 1947.
In 2010, Mulga had a population of 836 people. This was a bit less than its highest population of 973 in 2000. In 1998, a very strong F5 tornado caused damage to parts of the town. The name Mulga might come from the Creek word omalga, which means "all."
For many years, coal mining was an important activity in the Mulga area. The town also had a steel industry, supported by a local dam. Rail service was built to help transport goods and people.
