Mungar is a small, quiet place in the countryside of Queensland, Australia. It's part of the Fraser Coast Region. In 2021, about 328 people lived here. It's known for its peaceful rural setting and its connection to the Mary River.

Exploring Mungar's Location

Mungar is located about 256 kilometers (159 miles) north of Brisbane, which is the capital city of Queensland. It's also quite close to Maryborough, a bigger town, being only 19.7 kilometers (12.2 miles) to its southwest.

Natural Boundaries and Roads

The eastern side of Mungar is bordered by the beautiful Mary River. A main road called Mungar Road runs through the area from north to south.

The North Coast Railway Line

The North Coast railway line also passes through Mungar. It enters from the south, near Antigua, and leaves towards the north, near Grahams Creek. The railway line is located to the west of Mungar Road. There's even a train station here called Mungar railway station.

Mungar State School's Beginnings

The local school first opened its doors on July 9, 1875. Back then, it was called Mary River Saw Mill Provisional School. A couple of years later, on September 24, 1877, its name was changed to Mungar State School, which it is still called today.

The Mungar Junction Railway

Mungar railway station was an important junction for trains. A special railway line, called the Mungar Junction to Monto Branch Railway, started here. The first part of this line opened on July 29, 1889, connecting Mungar to Teebar (now known as Brooweena). The entire line, stretching all the way to Monto, was completed on September 15, 1928. The last train ran on this branch line in 2008, and it was officially closed in 2012.

Mungar State School is a government primary school for students from Prep (the first year of school) to Year 6. Both boys and girls attend this school, which is located at 1143 Mungar Road. In 2017, the school had 44 students and 3 teachers. By 2018, the number of students grew to 52, with 4 teachers.

There are no high schools directly in Mungar. Students who are ready for secondary school usually travel to Aldridge State High School in Maryborough, which is to the north-east.
