The Municipal Borough of Hornsey was a local government area in east Middlesex, England. It existed from 1867 until 1965. This area was responsible for local services and decisions for the people living there.

A Look Back at Hornsey's History

Hornsey has a long and interesting history of how it was governed. It started as a small part of a larger area. Over time, it grew and changed its local government structure.

How Hornsey Was Governed

In 1867, a group called a Local Board was set up for part of Hornsey. This board helped manage local services. Another part of Hornsey already had its own board since 1865.

Later, in 1894, a new law changed things. Hornsey became an urban district. This meant it had more control over its own local affairs.

Becoming a Municipal Borough

In November 1903, Hornsey became a municipal borough. This was a big step up! It meant Hornsey had its own council and mayor, similar to a city. The borough tried twice to become a county borough, which would have given it even more independence, but these attempts were not successful.

Hornsey was also part of the London postal district. This meant it used London postcodes. It was also covered by the Metropolitan Police District, which is the police force for London.

The Hornsey Coat of Arms

In 1904, the borough was given its own special symbol, called a coat of arms. This symbol told a story about Hornsey. It featured two oak trees. These trees reminded people of the old forests that once covered the area. Some parts of these ancient woods, like Queen's Wood and Highgate Wood, still exist today.

The coat of arms also had crossed swords. These were taken from the arms of the Diocese of London. The Diocese used to own the land where Hornsey is located. The borough's motto was Fortior quo paratior. This is a Latin phrase that means "The better prepared, the stronger."

Important Buildings and Services

One of the first big projects for the new borough was opening the Hornsey Cottage Hospital in 1910. This hospital provided important healthcare for local people.

Hornsey Town Hall was built between 1933 and 1935. It was designed by an architect named Reginald Uren. People really admired its modern style and beautiful details. It was seen as a symbol of good local government. However, over time, the building was used less and less for council services.

The End of the Borough

In 1965, the Municipal Borough of Hornsey was officially ended. Its area became part of a larger region called Greater London. This change happened because of a law called the London Government Act 1963.

Hornsey's area was then combined with two other areas: the Municipal Borough of Tottenham and the Municipal Borough of Wood Green. Together, these three areas formed the new London Borough of Haringey. This is the borough that exists today.
