This municipal district was officially created in 1995. Before that, it was known as Improvement District No. 6. Becoming a municipal district meant it gained more control over its local services and decisions.

The Municipal District of Ranchland No. 66 is known for being very quiet! It has one of the smallest populations in Alberta.
Population Changes Over Time
- In the 2016 Census, only 92 people lived here. They lived in 38 homes out of 57 available houses. This was a small increase from 79 people in 2011.
- The total land area of the district is about 2,638.7 km2 (1,018.8 sq mi). This means there are very few people per square kilometer, making it a very open and spacious area.
- A local count in 2013, called the 2013 municipal census, showed a slightly higher population of 104 people.
- Going back to the 2011 Census, there were 79 people living in 31 homes. This was a small drop from 86 people in 2006.
- In 2001, the district had 108 residents, which was the lowest population for any municipal district in Alberta at that time.
