Campeche in Mexico
Map of Mexico with Campeche highlighted

Campeche is a state located on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. It is divided into thirteen smaller areas called municipalities. Think of municipalities as local governments that help manage different parts of the state.

In 2020, a census showed that Campeche has about 928,363 people. This makes it the third least populated state in Mexico. It covers an area of about 57,693.59 square kilometers (22,275.62 sq mi), making it the 17th largest state by land area.

Each municipality in Campeche has its own local government. This is allowed by Mexico's Constitution. Every three years, people in each municipality vote for a leader called a municipal president. They also elect a group of people called a municipal council (ayuntamiento). This council is in charge of providing important services for the community. These services include things like clean water, street lights, public safety, managing traffic, and taking care of parks and cemeteries. They can also help the state and federal governments with education, emergency services, protecting the environment, and looking after historical places. Municipalities collect some money from property taxes and fees, but they also get funds from the state and federal governments.

The municipality with the most people in Campeche is Campeche, which is also the state capital. It has over 294,000 residents. The smallest municipality by population is Palizada, with about 8,600 residents. The largest municipality by land area is Calakmul, covering about 14,031.513 square kilometers (5,417.60 sq mi). The smallest is Tenabo at about 1,061.631 square kilometers (409.90 sq mi). Some of the first municipalities created were Campeche, Carmen, and Hecelchakán in 1825. The newest ones are Dzitbalché and Seybaplaya, which started in 2021.

What is a Municipality?

A municipality is like a local government area. It's a way to organize a state into smaller parts so that local needs can be met. Each municipality has its own leaders and rules to help the people living there.

How Municipalities are Governed

Every three years, citizens in a municipality vote for their leaders. The main leader is the municipal president. This person works with the municipal council, which is a group of elected officials. Together, they make decisions and manage the public services for their area.

Important Services Provided

Municipalities are responsible for many daily services that make life better for residents. These include:

  • Providing clean water and sewage systems.
  • Making sure street lights work.
  • Keeping the community safe with local police.
  • Managing traffic flow.
  • Maintaining public parks, gardens, and cemeteries.

They also help with schools, fire departments, medical emergencies, and protecting the environment.
